The Wedding of William and Kate | Westminster Abbey
She starts her walk down the Abbey’s Nave to the High Altar, a distance of 97 metres, carefully making her way around the Grave of the Unknown Warrior – the only grave in the Abbey which is never walked upon. The aisle has been transformed into an avenue of trees, lined with six field maples and two hornbeams, reflecting the couple’s love of the English countryside.

Edward the Confessor was buried in 1066 in the new Abbey church he had built and many monarchs have their tombs around his Shrine. Henry III, Edward III and his queen Philippa of Hainault and Richard II and Anne of Bohemia have fine effigies on their tombs. Edward the Confessor and Edith | Westminster Abbey
Edward, called the Confessor, was born at Islip in Oxfordshire between 1002 and 1005, the son of King Ethelred 'the Unready' and Emma. Driven from England by the Danes, and spending his exile in Normandy, the story goes that Edward vowed that if he should return safely to his kingdom, he would make a pilgrimage to St Peter's, Rome.
