At the direction of Gov. Ron DeSantis, Florida is quickly constructing a $450 million-a-year immigration detention center, dubbed "Alligator Alcatraz."

Called "Alligator Alcatraz" by state officials, Gov. Ron DeSantis said Thursday during a stop in Boca Raton that the facility will have "zero impact" on the Everglades.

Ron DeSantis said Wednesday that the temporary detention center being constructed at an isolated Everglades airfield will have “zero impact” on Everglades restoration, rebuking concerns by environmental advocates and local officials who say the project threatens drinking water and protected land.
