When Minnesota state Rep. Melissa Hortman and her husband were fatally shot this month, their golden retriever was grievously wounded and had to be euthanized.

Minnesota is honoring the golden retriever named Gilbert belonging to a prominent state lawmaker and her husband who were shot to death in their home.

The former speaker of the House, her husband and their dog were killed in what officials describe as a political assassination. All three are being honored at the State Capitol.
