The Dallas Cowboys are promoting Brian Schottenheimer to head coach, making his first defensive hire -- potentially defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus -- all the more important.
Eberflus spent seven seasons with the Cowboys, arriving in 2011 as the linebackers coach. He was promoted to defensive passing game coordinator/linebackers coach in 2016, a role he kept for two seasons until leaving to become the Colts’ defensive coordinator.

Eberflus, the Bears head coach from 2022 until his firing late in 2024, was a linebackers coach for the Cowboys from 2011-17.
Eberflus, who left Dallas to become the defensive coordinator for Indianapolis before using that as a platform to become the head coach of the Chicago Bears, is in discussions with club officials to return to the Cowboys as defensive coordinator, two people with knowledge of the potential staff told the Dallas Morning News.
