Like so many stars before him and after, Ryne Sandberg’s connection with Philadelphia is a tale of what might have been, both as a player and as a manager. In 1982, former Phillies manager Dallas Green was the Chicago Cubs’ general manager.

Sandberg, a 10-time All-Star who was the National League MVP in 1984, announced that he had been diagnosed with metastatic prostate cancer on Jan. 22, 2024.

The Hall of Fame second baseman was one of baseball’s best all-around players while starring for the Chicago Cubs.
