LOS ANGELES -- Downtown Los Angeles businesses hoped customers would return quickly on Tuesday after Mayor Karen Bass lifted a curfew she had imposed last week to prevent vandalism and break-ins during nighttime protests against President Donald Trump’s immigration crackdown.

Mario Guevara, who fled El Salvador two decades ago and built a large following as an independent journalist covering immigration in the Atlanta area, was broadcasting live on social media Saturday at a protest in DeKalb County when officers arrested him.

The produce market in downtown L.A. has become another casualty of the ICE raids, with employees not showing up and customers staying away out of fear.

Businesses across the region are reporting fewer customers, earlier closures and growing fear, one chamber leader said.
