The Trump administration can proceed with its dismantling of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, a federal appeals court ruled on Friday, allowing the agency to move forward with widespread layoffs expected to impact virtually its entire workforce.

The Trump administration sent reduction-in-force notices to more than 1,400 staffers at the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau in April.

In a 2-to-1 ruling, a federal appeals court said a lower court could not block the Trump administration’s plans to reduce the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s staff by nearly 90 percent.
