Artist Amy Sherald confirmed to ABC News that she had cancelled her upcoming exhibit at the Smithsonian, “American Sublime,” citing a “culture of censorship.

The artist said that she made the decision after she said she learned that her painting of a transgender Statue of Liberty might be removed to avoid provoking President Trump.

Amy Sherald, the former Baltimore artist who painted former first lady Michelle Obama’s portrait, has withdrawn her solo show from the Smithsonian Institute’s National Portrait Gallery, saying that museum officials attempted to censor her painting of a transgender woman posed as the Statue of Liberty.
