President Donald Trump said Monday he is placing Washington, DC’s, police department “under direct federal control” and deploying National Guard troops to the nation’s capital, citing a public safety emergency after an assault on a former government worker.

National Guard members deployed to D.C. to combat "lawlessness" will remain until late September, according to a leaked memo.

The president also said he would consider calling in active-duty military troops if needed, launching an unprecedented effort to take charge of the nation’s capital.
