The Maharashtra government has decided to set up a seven-member committee to explore banning petrol and diesel vehicles in the Mumbai metropolitan region (MMR) due to worsening air quality and increasing pollution in MMR.

This follows the Bombay High Court's directive earlier this month after taking suo moto cognisance of the city and its suburbs' worsening pollution crisis. The court spelled out some more steps for the state government and stated that the measures need to be taken immediately.

The committee, headed by retired IAS officer Sudhir Kumar Shrivastava, will study and submit a report with its recommendations within three months, reported PTI, citing a government resolution dated January 22.
