Juneteenth became a federal holiday in 2021, but has been celebrated much longer. So what is the history behind Juneteenth, and why do we celebrate it? WCCO's Reg Chapman explains.

There were two Juneteenth events happening this weekend, one in El Centro from noon until 5:00 p.m. while the other is taking place at Carver Park in Yuma from 6:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m.

The Pueblo community hosted its Juneteenth celebration in Ray Aguilera Park on Saturday afternoon, commemorating when slaves in Texas learned about their freedom.

Different events will take place in the Upstate for the Juneteenth holiday as many celebrate African American independence.

One of the programs included in Saturday’s celebration was the Juneteenth Observance “History Through Cooking”, presented by the C.J. Miller Foundation and MCM-Meridian. This program showed guests cooking demonstrations of African American foods.

TEXARKANA, Ark. – A Juneteenth pageant focusing on empowerment was held on Saturday at Arkansas Middle School. This is the first Juneteenth pageant that Texarkana has had in a long while. Mostly high school and middle school girls participated in the pageant, along with The Scholars, for which $1,000 worth of scholarships were awarded.

Juneteenth originally started in Galveston, Texas to commemorate June 19, 1865, the date that enslaved people in that state were informed of their freedom.

The 2025 Syracuse Juneteenth Festival brought food, music and entertainment to Clinton Square on Saturday, June 14.

As crowds gather on Mall C in downtown Cleveland for a daylong celebration of Juneteenth, the city is once again honoring the day in 1865 when the last enslaved Black Americans in Texas were finally freed — more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation.
