TEXARKANA, Ark. – A Juneteenth pageant focusing on empowerment was held on Saturday at Arkansas Middle School. This is the first Juneteenth pageant that Texarkana has had in a long while. Mostly high school and middle school girls participated in the pageant, along with The Scholars, for which $1,000 worth of scholarships were awarded.
Juneteenth originally started in Galveston, Texas to commemorate June 19, 1865, the date that enslaved people in that state were informed of their freedom.
