The Trump administration can proceed with its dismantling of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, a federal appeals court ruled on Friday, allowing the agency to move forward with widespread layoffs expected to impact virtually its entire workforce.

The Trump administration plans to cut the financial watchdog agency from a workforce of about 1,700 employees to approximately 200 employees.

In a 2-to-1 ruling, a federal appeals court said a lower court could not block the Trump administration’s plans to reduce the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s staff by nearly 90 percent.
