Mayor Vi Lyles joined former mayors Harvey Gantt and Patrick Cannon at the Sarah Stevenson Tuesday Forum as part of its Black History Month series. Former Mayor Anthony Foxx also appeared via video call, which brought together every African American mayor in the city’s history.

CHARLOTTE — Charlotte’s past and present black mayors gathered at Belmont Regional Center on Tuesday morning to tell stories of how they rose to their positions, and what they hope to see in Charlotte moving forward.

Three of Charlotte’s four Black mayors met to discuss their experiences during the Sarah Stevenson Tuesday Forum, an event at which they reflected on some of the connections between different generations of leaders. The forum is named for the late Sarah Stevenson, a local leader who co-founded the gathering.
