The drop — which could be as much as 14% — will have a brutal effect on the New York economy, as foreign tourists usually spend big, according to NYC Tourism + Conventions, which did the study.

Employment in the tourism industry also saw a decline last year with 89,000 jobs lost. Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli says it could take years for the city to recover.

Coker says the decline in New York City tourism is partly the result of having fewer Canadian visitors. Tour operators such as Matt Levy, who has seen a slowdown in business, agrees.
