Washington is seeking an emergency restraining order to block President Donald Trump’s takeover of its police department.
The development came after Washington, D.C.'s attorney general filed a lawsuit challenging the Trump administration's takeover of the Metropolitan Police Department.
Attorney General Pam Bondi on Friday issued a revised directive that leaves Washington, D.C.'s Metropolitan Police Department Chief Pamela Smith in charge of the city's police force, following a successful emergency legal effort by local D.C. leaders that challenged the administration's attempted total takeover of the MPD as unlawful.
The White House has backed off plans for a full takeover of the D.C. police force and will allow for the city’s police chief to remain in charge after a judge indicated they would block the move.
Earlier Friday, the nation's capital filed a lawsuit to block Republican President Donald Trump's takeover of its police department.
An executive order issued Aug. 14 reverses a long-standing policy prohibiting local officers from assisting ICE agents.
The position will give Cole the same authority as Metropolitan Police Chief Pamela Smith, who reports directly to Washington, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser.
