MLB trade deadline action officially kicked off when the Seattle Mariners acquired first baseman Josh Naylor from the Arizona Diamondbacks on Thursday.
Jerry Dipoto has a longstanding reputation for jump-starting the Trade Deadline market, and the Mariners’ president of baseball operations indeed sparked this year’s traction, with the first major domino falling to Seattle on Thursday night.
The Arizona Diamondbacks have made a big move this month, but they could continue to make more moves as the trade deadline draws closer.
Naylor signed for $10.9 million with Arizona after the trade. He was not eligible for free agency. The Guardians signed Carlos Santana for $12 million to replace Naylor at first base. Cleveland believed it was wiser to trade Naylor in December than wait to do it in the middle of the season.
